A Guide to Turner Falls: Waterfalls, Caves, and Adventure

Oklahoma’s Tallest Waterfall, Natural Caves, Castle Ruins, and More
If you’re a guest at Ardmore Lakes RV Resort and wondering what to do with a free day, Turner Falls Park is a must. It’s only minutes up the road, in the Arbuckle Mountains, and it delivers the kind of outdoor experience that makes you want to stay in Oklahoma just a little bit longer.
Whether you’re traveling with kids, planning a romantic getaway, or just looking for something beautiful to wander through, Turner Falls checks every box. Here’s everything you need to know before you go.
Oklahoma’s Tallest Waterfall
The star of the show is Turner Falls itself, a stunning 77-foot waterfall that tumbles down into a natural swimming area below. It’s the largest waterfall in Oklahoma, and honestly, seeing it in person never gets old. The water flows year-round thanks to Honey Creek, which winds through the Arbuckle Mountains and keeps things cool and refreshing even when the summer heat is in full swing.
The pool at the base of the falls is a favorite spot for swimming. The water stays cool even on the hottest days, and there’s something genuinely magical about taking a dip right below a waterfall that big. If you haven’t done it, you really should. Kids absolutely love it, and honestly, so do most adults.
The Caves Are Worth the Climb
One of the more surprising things about Turner Falls is the caves. There are several natural caves scattered throughout the park, and they’re fun to explore on your own without any guided tour required. The terrain around the caves involves some climbing and scrambling, so wear shoes with good grip and be prepared to use your hands in a few spots. It’s a genuinely adventurous experience that feels more like real exploring than a walk in the park.
The views you get from the higher cave areas are fantastic, giving you a great perspective on the waterfall and the surrounding valley. If your group is up for a little challenge, this part of the visit tends to be a highlight.
Castle Ruins and Hidden History
Just up the hillside above the falls, you’ll find the remains of a stone castle that was built back in the 1930s. It was originally a bathhouse and retreat, and while it’s now just ruins, it adds a genuinely cool and unexpected layer to your visit. It’s the kind of interesting historical detail that makes your stay even more memorable.
Swimming, Picnicking, and Just Hanging Out
Beyond the waterfall and caves, Turner Falls is simply a beautiful place to spend a relaxed day outdoors. There are picnic areas throughout the park, and bringing a cooler full of food and drinks is a popular thing to do. You can spread out on the grass and watch the kids run in and out of the water. There’s a concession area in the park if you’d rather not pack food, but having your own spread definitely adds to the experience.
Fishing is also allowed in certain areas of the park, and the Honey Creek trail gives you a chance to wander along the water through shaded terrain. It’s not a strenuous hike by any means, just a pleasant walk with a lot of natural beauty around every turn.
Quick Tips Before You Go
- Bring water shoes or sandals with straps for the swimming area and cave trails.
- Pack sunscreen. The pool area gets full sun and the reflection off the water is intense.
- Arrive early on weekends, especially in summer. The park fills up quickly and parking can get crowded.
- Bring cash. The entry fee is modest, but it’s good to have it ready.
- A small dry bag is worth it if you plan to swim and want to keep your phone and keys safe.
- Dogs are allowed in the park on leash, just not in the swimming areas.
