Winterizing Your RV for Cold Weather Camping
Winterizing Your RV for Cold Weather Camping

Preparing for Cold Weather Camping? Four Tips for Winterizing Your RV
Even though winters in North Florida are mild compared to other parts of the country, it’s still important to prepare your RV for cooler nights and potential cold snaps. Cold weather camping requires you to winterize your RV, not just to stay warm, but to help protect pipes, systems, and your peace of mind while you’re on the road. A little preparation now can save you from headaches later!
Insulate and Seal Drafts
Keeping your RV cozy starts with keeping the heat inside. Some easy ways to add insulation to help you sleep warmer and make your RV more energy-efficient. include:
- Thermal curtains or window coverings
- Draft stoppers around doors
- Foam board under beds or along the floor
- RV skirting around the base to block cold air
Protect Your Water System
One of the most essential parts of winterizing your RV is protecting your water system from freezing. Even if the temperatures only dip for a few nights, it can cause costly damage. To prevent this:
- Use a heated water hose or wrap hoses with heat tape
- Add RV-safe antifreeze to holding tanks
- Keep gray and black tanks closed until you’re ready to dump
Manage Condensation
Cold weather plus a warm RV often equals condensation. To avoid mildew and keep your RV fresh and dry:
- Crack a window slightly while cooking or sleeping
- Wipe down windows if moisture builds up
- Use moisture absorbers or a small dehumidifier
Heat Sources That Work For Cold Weather Camping
Before your trip, test your RV furnace to ensure it’s working properly. Many RV campers also bring along a layered approach:
- Small electric heaters (great when you have hookups like at The Station!)
- Heated blankets or mattress pads
When your RV is winterized, you’ll enjoy all the perks of off-season camping: quieter campgrounds and crisp, peaceful evenings under the stars. North Florida’s mild winters make it an especially great stopover or destination for snowbirds and travelers exploring routes along I-10 or I-75 – whether you’re crossing the Panhandle or crossing the stateline out of South Georgia.
