Your Guide to a Winter in the Desert

If this is your first winter in the desert, the drive isn’t the hard part. Picking your dates is. Come too early and the resort is still waking up from summer. Stay too late and you’ll be sharing Indio with a few hundred thousand festival fans.

Here’s how the season plays out at Indian Waters RV Resort & Cottages in Indio, month by month: what’s happening at the resort, what’s going on around the Coachella Valley, and when to arrive and leave.

The short version: Arrive early to mid November and plan to leave before the first Coachella weekend in April. That window gets you the resort’s busiest social stretch, the valley’s big winter events, from pro golf in January to pro tennis in March, and plenty of pool days in between. January and February are the most in-demand months, so lock those in first.

October: Settle In Before the Crowd

The resort is quiet this early. Most seasonal guests haven’t arrived yet, so you’ll have your pick of the pools and pickleball courts, plus time to get your site set up just the way you like it. Afternoons are still warm enough that you’ll want the AC. It’s a great month for the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, about 45 minutes away, which carries you up to 8,500 feet and the hiking trails of the San Jacinto Mountains.

November: The Season Starts

Rigs fill in steadily after mid-month, familiar faces return, and by Thanksgiving the resort’s social calendar is in full swing, with happy hours, pool activities, and holiday get-togethers. If you want a specific site type for the whole winter, November arrivals generally have more choices than December ones. For a first night out, head to VillageFest, the Thursday night street fair on Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs, with local vendors, food, and live music.

Life at the Resort in Season

One guest described Indian Waters as “adult summer camp,” with daily organized activities and a crowd that ranges from 25 to 85. The two heated pools host water volleyball and aerobics, the lit pickleball courts stay busy, and happy hour around the gas fire pits is a favorite way to end the day. Two event centers host group dinners and rallies, and there’s a fitness center, a billiards room, an outdoor kitchen, and three off-leash dog parks for your four-legged snowbirds.

Plenty of guests come back winter after winter, some for six or seven seasons running. Ask the office for the current activity calendar when you book.

December: Holidays in the Desert

Holiday events are a highlight for returning guests, and the resort fills steadily through the month. Evenings get cool, so pack real layers along with the shorts. On a clear morning, drive about 35 minutes south to the Salton Sea, where white pelicans and other migrating birds spend the winter along the shore.

January: Peak Season Settles In

This is the heart of snowbird season. Long-term guests are settled, the activity calendar is full, and the golf crowd arrives for the PGA Tour’s annual stop in La Quinta. With more than 100 golf courses across the Coachella Valley, you won’t run out of tee times. If you’re booking a January stay, book well ahead.

February: Festivals, Date Shakes, and Modernism

Indio hosts the Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival this month, and Palm Springs celebrates its famous mid-century architecture during Modernism Week. Don’t leave town without a date shake from Shields Date Garden, an Indio institution since the 1920s. Demand at the resort stays high, so February is not a month to wing it.

March: Tennis and Wildflowers

Tennis fans head to the BNP Paribas Open in nearby Indian Wells, one of the biggest tournaments outside the Grand Slams. It’s also prime time for Joshua Tree National Park, about 35 minutes east to the south entrance, where wildflowers bloom in wet springs. Back at the resort, pool days go from nice to necessary. Toward the end of the month you’ll see the first wave of departures as the season winds down.

April: Know Your Festival Dates

The big factor is Coachella and Stagecoach, which take over Indio across several April weekends. At Indian Waters, festival weekends carry a three-night minimum, and day visitors, normally free, are charged during those dates. If you want quiet, plan to leave before the first festival weekend. If you want the energy, book early. Either way, most snowbirds head out before the real desert heat arrives in May.

So When Should You Come?
  • First winter, full experience: Arrive in early to mid November and leave in late March. You’ll get the whole social season and the valley’s biggest events.
  • Shorter stay: January through February is peak community and peak event season.
  • Flexible and want elbow room: October or April gives you more space. You trade that for warmer afternoons and, in April, festival traffic.

Before You Book

A few details first-timers tend to miss:

  • Lock in dates early. Long-term stays (31+ days) need 45 days’ notice to cancel with a refund, so settle your plans before you commit.
  • A few house rules. Generators aren’t permitted, fire pits are propane only, and EV charging at your site isn’t allowed.
  • Arrival is gated. Call the office at 760-342-8100 for your entry code before you pull in.
  • Bring your golf cart. Carts are welcome once they’re registered with the office.

Yes, up to two pets per site. There are three off-leash dog parks on the property. Pets aren’t allowed in the pool areas, restrooms, or other buildings.

Can family and friends visit?

Yes, and day visitors are free except during Coachella, Stagecoach, and Head Trip weekends. Each RV site includes two people, with room for up to eight.

Is the Wi-Fi good enough for streaming?

Yes. You can do it yourself or hire a professional, and there’s a small fee if you use resort water.

Where do I get groceries?

The on-site store covers the basics, and Indio has full-size grocery stores a short drive away.

For monthly availability, visit the Monthly Stays page or call the office directly. To plan your days off-site, the Things to Do guide covers local favorites.
