Labor Day is one of the busiest RV weekends of the year for a reason. Three days, zero PTO days taken, and just enough runway to actually do something with it. Football, water parks, small town festivals, one more night around the fire. Pick your version and get to planning!

Why Labor Day Is One of the Best Weekends for RV Travel

The timing is perfect. The water is still warm enough for one last swim and the heat has finally broken, so you get the best of August without the part that drives you inside by two in the afternoon.

The calendar helps too. Small towns pull out all the stops this weekend with festivals, live music, farmers markets, and fireworks. Gas prices usually dip once peak summer travel winds down, so the drive costs you less than it did in July.

And then there is what the weekend actually means. For families it is one last adventure after the back to school scramble. For everyone else it is proof that summer does not have to end quietly. Three days is enough to do it right.

Here are four great ways to spend them.

The Family Adventure Weekend

This is the last big one, so go big. Water parks and pools. The theme park you kept saying you would get to. The lake, the go karts, the mini golf course with the windmill. Whatever your family means when they say summer, do it one more time before the towels get packed away for the year.

A few of our parks put you right next door to the big ones:

• Americamps, Ashland VA. Eight miles from Kings Dominion. Close enough to do a full day and still make it back to the site for dinner.
• Twin Grove, Pine Grove PA. Thirty five minutes from Hersheypark, where the summer season and the Boardwalk water park both wrap up on Labor Day itself.
• Northern Kentucky RV Park, Dry Ridge KY. About an hour and fifteen up I-75 from Kings Island and its Soak City water park.

The College Football Road Trip

If your family measures the end of summer in kickoffs instead of pool days, week one of the college season lands right on the holiday.

You do not need a stadium ticket to make a day of it. Get the screen up under the awning, drag the chairs into a half circle, and fire up the grill before noon. Somebody from two sites over will wander past and ask who is playing. Invite them. Tell them to bring a chair. By the fourth quarter you will have a crowd.

If your team is playing within driving distance, park the RV nearby, go tailgate, and roll back in for the night games. A few of our parks sit right in the middle of good football country:

• Natalbany Creek, Amite City LA. An hour from Baton Rouge. Close enough for a night game at Tiger Stadium and a drive home while the tailgates are still breaking down.
• The Station, Madison FL. An hour up I-10 from Tallahassee.
• Peach Queen, Jemison AL. Splits the difference between Tuscaloosa and Auburn, about ninety minutes one way and just under two the other. The rare campsite that works no matter which side of that rivalry you married into.
  
  

Either way you win the same way. No hotel crowds, no holiday rate gouging, no hunting for parking at midnight. You land back at your own site, throw another log on, and argue about the officiating until somebody falls asleep in a camp chair.

The Events and Festivals Weekend

Or let the towns do the planning for you. A handful of events near our parks are worth building the entire trip around.

• Northern Kentucky RV Park, Dry Ridge KY. Cincinnati’s Riverfest hits its 50th year on Sunday, September 6, with fireworks launching from barges, rooftops, and the crowns of bridges along the Ohio River. The Kentucky side at Newport on the Levee throws its own party with live music and more elbow room for families.
• North Landing Beach, Virginia Beach VA. The biggest music weekend on this list. The city puts free concerts on three boardwalk stages September 4 through 6, and the Super Girl Surf Festival piles on 21 more free shows Saturday through Monday, headlined by Switchfoot, Lupe Fiasco, Gym Class Heroes and B.o.B, alongside pro surfing and thousands of athletes across a dozen sports. The concerts cost nothing but you do have to register ahead.
• Heartland RV ResortPark, Hermosa SD. Crazy Horse Memorial traditionally caps the season with a night blast on September 6, a ceremonial detonation that lights the mountain with fireballs and pyrotechnics. Only two of these happen all year.
• Twin Grove, Pine Grove PA. Twenty minutes from the Schuylkill County Wine Festival in Hegins Park on September 6, and an hour from Harrisburg’s Kipona Festival, which turns 110 this year.
  
  

Wherever you land, check the local calendar before you go. Some of the best weekends start with a town square you had never heard of.

The Relax and Recharge Weekend

Not every version of this weekend needs a plan, and that is the whole appeal. Point the RV at a scenic road and see where it goes. Find a trail. Cast a line. Stop at a winery or a brewery on the way back, because there is nowhere you have to be.

And there is a version of this where you never leave the park at all. Coffee on the picnic table while the campground wakes up. A chair in the shade and the book you keep meaning to finish. The pool in the late afternoon once the crowd thins out. A walk around the loop at dusk when everybody has a fire going and something on the grill. That is a full weekend right there, and you did not burn a tank of gas chasing it.

There is a practical case for it too. Once the calendar turns, it disappears. School events, fall sports, then Thanksgiving and the whole holiday sprint right behind it. Labor Day is the last long weekend of the year that nobody has claimed yet. Take it while it is still yours.

Wherever you land on that list, from the water park marathon to the weekend of doing absolutely nothing, the right home base makes it better. Spacious sites, resort style amenities, and locations close to the attractions, trails, lakes, and small towns worth the drive. Want a pool and a playground? Plenty of those. Want a quiet spot with room to breathe? That too. Find the park that fits the weekend you are picturing.
