Plan your Labor Day Weekend at Americamps RV Resort

Summer is not over yet. You have one long weekend left, and if your RV is parked in Ashland you barely have to drive to find the action.

Americamps RV Resort & Cottages sits on Air Park Road just north of Richmond, right off I-95. There is a theme park just up the road, a brewery across the street, one of the best small downtowns in Virginia five minutes away, and a whole city twenty minutes south. Three days is enough to do it right. Here is how to spend them.

Kings Dominion

Kings Dominion in Doswell covers 280 acres with more than 60 rides and attractions, 13 roller coasters, and a 20-acre water park. That proximity changes how you do a theme park day. You can go hard until the afternoon heat, come back to your site for lunch and a swim, and head back for the evening rides when the lines thin and the temperature drops.

One thing to check first. Parks often shift to weekends-only operation once September arrives, so confirm holiday hours on their site before you promise anyone a Monday.

The Brewery… Literally Across the Street

Center of the Universe Brewing is within walking distance! COTU is a brewery, winery, and cidery all in one, with a 5,000 square foot tasting room and a beer garden out back. There are shaded picnic tables, cornhole boards, food trucks, live music, and a family friendly arcade, and the patio welcomes dogs. Weekend hours run noon to nine on Saturday and noon to eight on Sunday.

It is the easiest dinner plan you will make all weekend, and nobody has to drive.

Downtown Ashland, the Center of the Universe

A former mayor gave the town that nickname, and locals kept it.

Five minutes from your site, two railroad tracks run straight down the middle of Center Street. More than 50 trains a day rumble through, and the restaurants along the tracks put tables close enough that dinner comes with a freight train. It sounds like a gimmick until you are sitting there.

The Ashland and Hanover Visitor Center is housed in a restored 1923 depot right on the tracks, and Trains Magazine has named it one of the top ten railfan spots in the country. Pick up the self-guided walking tour there. It is about a mile and it loops through two National Register historic districts and the Randolph-Macon College campus.

Richmond Is Twenty Minutes South

When you want a bigger day, the city is right there. Museums, gardens, the James River, and a food scene that punches well above the metro’s size.

Check the Richmond events calendar before you go, since the holiday weekend lineup shifts year to year and there is usually something on.

When Nobody Feels Like Driving

Plenty of good weekends here never leave the property.

There is a seasonal pool, a pickleball court, a basketball court, lawn games, a new playground, a fenced dog park, a fitness center, and a community fire pit for the evening. The on-site store carries local goods along with the stuff you forgot to pack. Guests consistently mention that the park runs real holiday weekend programming, from foam parties to bingo to weekend breakfasts, so check with the office at arrival to see what is on the schedule.

Pick one big outing for the weekend and let the rest happen right here. The full rundown lives on the resort’s Things to Do page.
